Hours after starring for Arsenal in the Women’s Super League win over Brighton which sealed a first league title for the Gunners since 2012 on Sunday, Vivianne Miedema, has been named the PFA Women’s Player of the Year award winner for 2019 to cap a glorious day.

Miedema’s win at the Professional Footballers’ Association awards also made it a double celebration in the Netherlands as her compatriot and Liverpool star, Virgil van Dijk, was handed the men’s award.
22-year-old Miedema, who scored a goal and assisted another in the 4-0 win at Brighton earlier on Sunday, beat Manchester City trio Steph Houghton, Nikita Parris and Keira Walsh, as well as Ji So-Yun and Erin Cuthbert of Chelsea to the award.

Miedema is the WSL top scorer this season with 22 goals from 19 matches played, and could have had a 23rd goal at Brighton – who have Super Falcons striker, Ini Umotong, in their first team – only to see her headed effort come off the bar.

Meanwhile, her compatriot, van Dijk, beat another set of Man. City players in Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero as well as Bernardo Silva to the award. His Liverpool team-mate, Sadio Mane, as well as Chelsea talisman, Eden Hazard, were the other nominees for the award.
