Just days after a three-storey building collapsed in Ita-Faji, Lagos Island in Lagos State, another building has collapsed, this time in Ibadan, Oyo state.

The building, a two-storey, collapsed at Sogoye, along Bode area of the ancient city.
Rescue operations have begun at the scene of the building collapse as trapped victims cry for help.

Speaking with PUNCH, Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Toye Arulogun, said the government was on top of the situation.

Arulogun said, “We have deployed two excavators there. Our officials are right there now, to rescue trapped victims. There is no cause for alarm.”

Bricklayers, artisans and other workers on the site of a three-storey building that collapsed in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, have provided insights into the incidents leading to the tragedy.

According to PUNCH, the building, located in Sogoye, along Bode, Molete area of Ibadan, Oyo State, had collapsed suddenly on Friday while still under construction, with several people injured and others trapped underneath.

According to the constructions workers, tragedy struck when bricklayers and other artisans on site were rounding off for the day’s work.

One of the survivors, Toheeb Gbadamosi, 19, said: “Today is my first time of working at this place.

“I just came around in order to raise some money for my upkeep because things were difficult. I thank God that I came out of the rubble alive.”

Other lucky ones include 42-year-old Olalekan Dauda; Tunde, and Rilwan Oladepo.

Dauda said he was working with other artisans on the third floor when the building suddenly gave way.

“I just heard a sudden blast and later found that I and others in the building have been trapped in the rubble,” Dauda said.

According to one of the rescuers who gave his name as Aafa Mojeed Agbaje, two of his relatives — Tunde and Rilwan Oladepo — were also victims of the collapsed structure.

Agbaje said: “I am worried because other people that I know are presently in the wreckage.

“Tunde sustained injuries on his face and limbs. We have taken him to Molete Hospital and he is recuperating.”
