Manchester City forward Georgia Stanway has signed a new deal with the Women’s Super League leaders until 2022. The 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal, which will keep her at the Club until the end of the 2022 season, and will wear the number 10 shirt from the 2019/20 campaign.

Despite her youth, the Barrow-born forward – now a regular starter – has clocked up 88 appearances for Nick Cushing’s side, scoring 35 goals, as she helped the Blues to a clean sweep of domestic trophies and two Champions League semi-finals.

Signed from Blackburn Rovers as a teenager, she made her debut aged just 16, and scored on her second substitute appearance. Renowned as a scorer of stunning, long-range efforts, Stanway has netted crucial strikes in her fledgling career, gaining multiple Goal of the Season awards. With the Blues still in the hunt for a domestic treble, the youngster expressed her delight to have committed her long-term future to the Club.
“It’s amazing,” she declared. “I’ve been here for four years already and I’ve loved every single minute. “To be here to stay is a massive achievement and I can’t wait to get going again. “This is where I feel at home and this is where the majority of my development has happened. I’m in the best possible position to move forward and I’m happy here.

“I love the environment and the fact everyone has each other’s back, supporting, but at the same time, it’s so competitive. “You’re never securing your spot – someone’s always chasing – and that’s what people thrive off. “That’s the environment we create and I love it. Day in, day out, it’s like coming into Disneyland and to spend every day here is unbelievable. “I’m just so looking forward to the future.”

The news provides a timely boost for Stanway, who is staking a real claim for a World Cup place with Phil Neville’s England side. The forward has already tasted success on the international stage, starring as the Lionesses clinched bronze in the Under-17s and U20s World Cup campaigns. Having captained the U17s, she then played a pivotal role in the U20s tournament, netting six goals – a joint best with Golden Boot winner Patricia Guijarro.

As a result, Stanway did not have to wait long for her first senior call-up, promoted to Neville’s squad for the friendlies against Austria and Sweden in October 2018. Naturally, she scored on her debut in a 3-0 win. One of the league’s top goalscorers for 2018/19, she hopes her prolific performances will earn a place on the plane to France but as always, is remaining grounded.

“I’m only young,” she added. “I’ve got patience and time on my side but I’m ready. Whatever happens, happens. “Over the past eight months, I’ve shown what I can do. Whatever I do now potentially might not make a difference because the decision might have already been made but I can keep pushing. “There’s still a lot to play for. There are trophies to be won at the end of the season and I want City to be lifting them so I’ll be pushing for that and hopefully, we’ll end on a high.”

One of the most exciting young prospects in the English game, the starlet has already earned individual acclaim – nominated for the 2017 PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year and 2016 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, and named in the 2018 UEFA Women’s Champions League Team of the Season. Driven by success and the desire to become the best, Stanway has high ambitions for her future – on a personal and collective level.

“By the end of my career, I want to have won all the trophies by any means necessary!” she smiled. “We’ve won quite a lot in England already but we need to win the Champions League and the World Cup. “On a personal level, I’d love to get recognised for the Ballon d’Or. It’s such a prestigious award and only the best get there so that’s something I’d love to do.”

Everyone at Manchester City were delighted with the news and they all wish Georgia the very best for the remainder of her time at the club. Stanway could yet be part of a treble-winning side this season, with City having already won the Continental League Cup and reached the FA Cup semi-finals.
