Owen Hargreaves has urged Callum Hudson-Odoi to leave Chelsea if he is not getting enough playing time under Maurizio Sarri. Hargreaves believes incoming Chelsea signing Christian Pulisic is a downgrade on current star Hudson-Odoi.
Chelsea won the race to sign USA international Pulisic in January and he will arrive at Stamford Bridge in the summer for a fee of £58million. Pulisic has developed into a key player for Borussia Dortmund over the last three years but has lost his place in the starting XI this term. The 20-year-old is highly rated in Germany but Hargreaves says Hudson-Odoi, who scored his fourth goal of the season in Thursday’s 3-0 win over Dynamo Kiev, is a better player.
He told BT Sport: ‘I love him [Hudson-Odoi]. Just look at what he has achieved at the age of 18. Every time he plays he affects the game and makes things happen. The only problem is Willian and Pedro are producing as well. But every time he plays he looks ready. He needs more games. If he doesn’t get them he should go elsewhere. The problem is they’ve just spent £50m on Pulisic. What’s the point of that? You can’t tell me he’s a better player than Callum. Not in a million years! It’s bizarre. It doesn’t look like the opportunities are there. So he may have to go play somewhere else for a year on loan and then come back.’
Hudson-Odoi was only introduced in the 78th minute but made an instant impact as Chelsea clinched a convincing win in the last-16 first leg tie. Speaking before the match, Glenn Hoddle said the teenager was capable of becoming ‘far better’ than Pedro and Willian, who both also scored against Kiev.
‘I think he’s an immense talent,’ he said. ‘What I’ve seen at youth level and when England [Under-17s] won the World Cup, he looks the part, he looks intelligent. I look for intelligence in a young player, not what he can do with the ball, it’s where he will be in five years’ time. Will he be far better than Willian? Will he be far better than Pedro? Probably, if he’s given the chance. He’s got to get the chance to go in there and get the experience under his belt.’
The former England midfielder added: ‘He’s got immense talent, he looks the part but he needs the time to play. He hasn’t played enough. He’s not played 20 games, the minutes equate to eight-and-a-half matches. They’re talking about selling him for £40m. He’s not proven anything yet. Eight-and-a-half games is nothing.’
