#Breaking: Governor Akeredolu Saves N463M On 30 Reconditioned Vehicles (See Photos)

Reports has it that Ondo state Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has saved the state the sum of N463Million by reconditioning thirty broken down and unserviceable vehicles instead of buying new ones.

Akeredolu, who inherited a lean purse, engaged the services of an automobile company, Logical Ideas Limited, to recondition serviceable and unserviceable vehicles in all ministries, extra-ministerial departments and agencies.

While handling over the vehicles, the chairman of the company, Mr. Oluwole Okunnuga, said the state government saved N463million on the thirty reconditioned cars.

He said the government spent N65million only on the 30 Toyota vehicles, adding that the same number would have cost a whooping sum of N528million if new ones were purchased.

Okunnuga explained that each of the reconditioned vehicles cost an average of less than N3million, saving the state from acquiring the lowest cost brand new of N15Million.

He stressed that the vehicles, though not brand new, are better than fairly used ones and have a warranty of two years on the replaced brand new engines.

In his goodwill message, the state Commissioner for finance, Mr. Wale Akinterinwa, described the reconditioning of the Vehicles as cost-effective and a reflection of a transformational leadership.

In his address, Governor Akeredolu said his decision to refurbish all government vehicles was taken due to paucity of funds and cost effectiveness, considering the skyrocketed and outrageous cost of procuring brand new vehicles.

The governor said the company was engaged to carry out a total overhauling of 284 vehicles in phases, adding that the move would save the state government a huge amount of money that otherwise would have been spent on new vehicles.

He said: "The vehicles we are receiving today is a clear evidence of prudent and logical decision at this time when there is paucity of fund in the state in particular and Nigeria in general

"It is first of its kind in the history of this state and it is in tandem with our electioneering campaign to think a new and act a new."

The governor, who called for the cultivation of maintenance culture among the users of the vehicle, stressed that there will be reward for any driver who handles the vehicle attached to him very well while those who do otherwise will be sanctioned.

Lagos High Court Jails Ex-vanguard Chief Accountant For 7-years (See What He Did)

Lagos High Court in Ikeja presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye has sentenced a former Chief Accountant of Vanguard Newspaper, Bhadmus Abiodun, to 7 years imprisonment.

He was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on an eight-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and stealing to the tune of N40.66million belonging to his employer, Vanguard Newspapers Limited.

The court also sentenced former circulation representative of Vanguard newspaper for Benin, Joseph Ejike Ezeobi, to three years imprisonment over his involvement in the stealing and forgery. They were jailed without an option of fine.

Prosecution counsel, Abba Mohammed, informed the court that Abiodun committed the offence in collaboration with the Vanguard Media Representative for Benin, Joseph Ezeobi. Mohammed added that Abiodun committed the offence alongside Ezeobi between January 20, 2006 and January 7, 2009.

The prosecuting counsel further informed the court that the convict and his accomplice had on various dates, illegally converted N4.52million, N18million, N18.14million belonging to Vanguard.

Mohammed said, “Abiodun and Ezeobi had on January 7, 2009 in Lagos, with intend to defraud the Complainant (Vanguard Media Limited), fraudulently converted N800,000 property of Vanguard Media Limited.

“Abiodun and Ezeobi had on November 21, 2007 in Lagos, with intend to defraud Vanguard Media Limited, conspired to forge a Wema Bank Plc deposit slip No. 0278679 purporting to be in the value of N740,000.00 dated November 21, 2007.

According to Mohammed, the offences are contrary to Sections 390 (7), 467 (2)(i) and 516 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State 2003. In his verdict over the case, Justice Ipaye held that the money Biodun and Ezeobi kept for themselves belongs to Vanguard newspaper.

The judge convicted and sentenced the accountant to seven years in prison on count one to eight. The prison terms for counts two to eight are to run concurrently.

“Many leaders would prefer to defend their seats and positions at the expense of their people in such situations, the path Governor Ortom took was capable of costing him his second term election but he never bothered.

Responding, Governor Ortom commended Apostle Suleiman for supporting the state through prayers and his N5million cash donation for the upkeep of Internally Displaced Persons in the state, describing him as a true friend of the state.

Ortom said the invasion of the state was for the purposes of occupation and not a grazing warning that “Benue would not accept open grazing, grazing reserves, Ruga or whatever because they are all in conflict with our Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.”

The Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has suspended all the 27 Local Government Area Chairmen, their deputies and the 645 councilors in the state.

According to News, the governor also suspended all the political appointees of the 27 LGAs of the state.

A statement issued in Owerri, the state capital on Tuesday by Chibuike Onyeukwu, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, said that the governor’s action was in pursuant to the provisions of Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Local Government Administration as amendment law, 2019 and S.73(3) of Imo State Local Government Administration Law No 15 of 2000 as amended.
Consequently, the governor has set up Interim management Committees in all the LGAs of the state.

The statement said that the governor had directed the Directors of Administration and General Services of each LGA to take over the management of the councils until the Interim management Committees were confirmed by the state lawmakers.

The statement also said that Ihedioha had approved the dissolution and removal of Chairman and Members of the State’s Independent Electoral Commission.

The statement read,” Governor Emeka Ihedioha, has approved the suspension of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, Councilors and political appointees of the local governments of Imo State and constitution of Interim Management Committees for six months.”

“The suspension is contained in the instrument signed by the Governor, pursuant to the recommendation made to him by the Imo State House of Assembly.”

“This is in pursuant also, to the provisions of Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Local Government Administration (Amendment) law, 2019 and S.73(3) of Imo State Local Government Administration Law No 15 of 2000 (as amended) and all other laws enabling him.”

“The Governor has set up Interim Management Committees to manage the affairs of each Local Government.”

“Consequently, the Directors of Administration and General Services(DAGS) of each Local Government have been directed to take over management, pending the confirmation of Interim Management Committees by the State Assembly.”

“In a similar development, the Governor approved the dissolution and removal of the chairman and members of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).”

“This is following a resolution supported by a two-thirds’ majority of the State Assembly rendered on 6th June 2019, seeking their removal from office. The action is also in accordance with the provisions of S.7(1) of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission Law and all other extant laws of the State.”

“The Commission will be reconstituted in due course to put in place the machinery for conducting a credible election into the local governments.”

“The Governor further directs that these officers handover to the most senior civil servant in the Commission.”

Just In: FG May Lift Land Border Vehicle Importation Ban — Customs Boss Reveals

The Federal Government may relax the ban on importation of vehicles through the land border.
The government had in January 2017 ordered a ban on importation of vehicles through the laind borders.

The restriction on the importation of vehicles followed that of rice, whose imports through the land borders had been banned since April 2016.

But the government may reconsider its decision after the successful implementation of a new initiative by the Nigeria Customs Service and the Customs Service of the Republic of Benin to automate and network all electronic information about incoming cargoes through the border.
The Comptroller General, NCS, Col Hameed Ali (retd.), who was represented by the Assistant Comptroller, Information and Communication Technology, Benjamin Aber, at a stakeholders’ meeting on the new initiative, expressed confidence that with a successful implementation of the bilateral electronic connectivity programme between Nigeria and Republic of Benin, the Federal Government might lift the ban on items coming through the land border.

Ali said the decision of the government to shut down importation of vehicles through the border was because the government did not have a reliable system that would assist in controlling importation.

With declarations made for imports transiting from either of the countries electronically shared, the process of import and export would be done in a transparent manner and the government seeing such transparency would be convinced to relax its stance on land border importation.

He said “Vehicles were formerly being imported through the Seme border, but suddenly it was banned because the pressure of enforcement of anti-smuggling for vehicles and claiming of lives and revenue were becoming too alarming, so the government had to restrict the importation through Nigerian ports.

“When vehicles came through the land border, we did not have a record of how the imported cars came here and fake documentation became a common phenomenon. The ban was just a control measure against the practice.”

He added, “By the time we successfully deploy this reliable, transparent and predictable programme that would assist government agencies, not only Customs, to control and regulate the importation of vehicles, the government may decide to relax such restrictions.”

Ali said the establishment of the automated platform and bilateral connectivity meant that any truck that left the Republic of Benin, the information would already be remotely sent in English to Nigeria Customs Service system.
He also gave the assurance that illegal checkpoints mounted by Customs officers and other security agencies along the border corridors would disappear automatically.

“The roads also have to be fixed, because we cannot automate clearing of goods between the Customs and at the end, the stakeholders would be complaining,” he pointed out.

He said the new platform would be deployed by June 20.

A Group Known As The Yoruba Koya Leadership and Training Foundation, a pan-Yoruba social-cultural group, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the South-West governors to redouble efforts at ending insecurity in the region.

The group, in a June 12 “O To Ge Rally” (Enough is Enough Rally) tagged: “Safety and Security in Yoruba Land”, held in Lagos to commemorate June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day on Wednesday, demanded security of lives and property.

According to them, there is need to end incessant kidnapping, killings and destruction of farmlands by suspected herdsmen in Yorubaland.

Speaking at the rally, Otunba Deji Osibogun, the National Convener of the group, noted the Federal Government, as well as the South-West governors, must rise up to security challenges facing the region.

“It is enough; this suffering is too much. Our political class should not wait until Nigerians bite back. Security is our right.

“Let there be employment opportunities for our youths to prevent them from taking to crimes. Don’t let the hoodlums kill us all, give us security,” he said.

The Yoruba activist noted that hoodlums parading themselves as herdsmen had allegedly overran Yorubaland and tormenting farmers.

He called for licenses for commercial motorcycle riders and hawkers, especially for non-indigenes to enhance security and proper monitoring.

Osibogun decried a situation where the government was not talking to the people and the people not talking to the government on security.

“It is time for the government to sit down and dialogue with the people on security. We are concerned,” he said.

The convener further frowned at the alleged clampdown on some Yoruba activists in Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, and the Ekiti States, who planned same rallies in their respective states and called for their immediate release.

He urged the people to ask questions about how public funds were being used, saying that the inability of South-West governors to secure major highways called for questions.

According to him, there is need to foster unity among Yoruba nation to move the region forward.

He added that Yoruba should be given what was due to them in the scheme of things.

Also, Mr Maxwell Adeleye said: “There is a no democracy without security. Government should please show more care as people are dying. When security fails, the government fails.

“This is to appeal to the government of Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun and Lagos states to take security of lives and property more serious. We are here to say enough is enough.

“Security is an issue we need to address but it is quite unfortunate that our men in some western states are being clamped down.”

Adeleye, who decried cases of killings of innocent Yoruba people by hoodlums masquerading as herdsmen, said the group thought of expressing its grievances on June 12 being a historical day.

Nigerian journalist Kofi Bartels Reveals How Nigerian 'Federal Sars' Beat Him, Threatened Him with Sexual Assault (See More)!

Nigerian authorities must investigate and hold accountable the police officers responsible for allegedly assaulting and threatening journalist Kofi Bartels, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

On June 5, a group of at least five police officers punched and kicked Bartels, a reporter with the privately owned Nigeria Info radio station, beat him on the knees with pieces of wood, and arrested him for filming them, according to the journalist, who spoke with CPJ on the phone and posted about the attack on Twitter.

At the police station, an officer told Bartels that the journalist had "been giving them problems for a long time," citing Bartels' work covering the police in Rivers state, and said that they would put the journalist in a prison cell with an inmate who would rape him, Bartels told CPJ.

The officers did not charge Bartels with a crime, and released him at about 2 p.m., after the intervention of their former commander, about four hours after the incident began, Bartels said. Bartels told CPJ he went to the hospital after he was released, where doctors examined his bruised knees and recommended he receive x-rays of his neck and spine, which he is scheduled to undergo tomorrow.

"The police officers involved in this horrific alleged assault against Kofi Bartels must be swiftly brought to justice," said Angela Quintal, CPJ's Africa program coordinator, in Johannesburg. "The initial assault of a reporter documenting police behavior, compounded by the brazen retaliation for past reporting, is a chilling example of a gravely consistent pattern of Nigerian security services' violence against journalists."

Bartels said the incident began when he was filming the officers, whom he identified as members of Nigeria's Special Anti-Robbery Squad, beating a boy outside Bartel's home in Port Harcourt. The officers saw him filming, beat him, and brought him to the robbery squad's headquarters where, after learning that Bartels had a history of reporting on the police, threatened him and beat him again with their hands and wooden sticks, he told CPJ.

Nnamdi Omoni, spokesperson for the Rivers state police, told CPJ over the phone today that five men from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad were under investigation for the alleged attack against Bartels, but that they denied wrongdoing. Omoni said that the police force's internal accountability mechanism would try the officers, but that Bartels could also pursue his case in a civilian court.

Rivers State Police Commissioner Usman A. Belel is aware of the situation and information from an investigation should be available after one week, Omoni said.

Bartels' alleged assault came just days after Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission presented President Muhammadu Buhari with a report on methods to reform the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, according to news reports. The report resulted from "allegations of human rights violations perpetrated by officers and men of SARS," Buhari said on Twitter.

Earlier this year, journalists told CPJ they were harassed and detained by Nigerian security forces while covering the country's elections. Last year, Nigerian police detained a group of 10 journalists covering Buhari and assaulted two, CPJ reported at the time.

The Nigerian Police in Anambra State said they have arrested the suspected murderer of Chinasa Pauline Agbata, a female student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed this in a statement in Awka, said the suspect, Onudili Sontochukwu, was apprehended following a discreet investigation.

Following the incident, police detectives attached to the Command Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) launched aggressive manhunt of perpetrators and arrested one Onudili Sontochukwu ‘m’ aged 25 years on the 2/6/2019.”

He said the victims, students of Anambra State university Igbariam and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, respectively were later released by the suspects after collecting ransom. He said, “On the 3/6/2019 at about 5:15 pm, Police detectives attached to the Command Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested at Osisioma Aba in Abia State, one Kingsley Ugorji ‘m’ aged 33 years and Joseph Darlington ‘m’ aged 25 years following a discreet investigation. The suspects who specialize in abducting university students using various tricks allegedly conspired and kidnapped one Obinna Favour ‘m’ aged 18 years on 27/5/2019 and equally kidnapped one Amakaeze Luke ‘m’ aged 22 years on the 31/5/2019.”

Court Grants Suspect Involved In N35m ‘Swallowed By Snake’ Bail

An FCT High Court Maitama, on Monday, admitted Philomins Chieshe, charged with alleged “missing” N35 million belonging to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to bail in the sum of N20 million.

Chieshe, a clerical officer with JAMB, was arraigned last Friday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside Samuel Sale Umoru, a state coordinator with JAMB.

Ruling in the bail application, Justice Peter Affen declared that bail was not about setting people free but to ensure that a defendant attends trial.

He added that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015 holds that bail be granted in the most liberal terms, NAN reports.

Affen also ordered the defendant to produce two sureties in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must have landed property in Abuja worth the value of the bail sum.

Justice Affen further ordered the defendant’s counsel, Mr Mark Feese, to put in writing the good characters of the sureties.

He further held that the court registrar, would then verify the addresses of the sureties, while the defendant must drop her international passport with the court.

Affen also ordered that pending when the defendant meets the bail conditions, she would be remanded at Suleja Prison.

Earlier, Feese prayed the court to admit his client to bail, arguing that contrary to the submissions of the prosecution, she was granted administrative bail by EFCC and did not jump bail.

Opposing the bail, EFCC counsel, Mr Ekene Iheanacho, prayed the court to refuse the application, saying that she had jumped bail.

In the case of Samuel Umoru, Justice Affen adjourned further hearing of his bail application until June 11.

In a related development, the court granted bail to another JAMB official, Yakubu Jekada, bail in the sum of N10million with one surety in like sum.

Jekada was separately arraigned on a four-charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and dishonesty use of JAMB funds to the tune of N11.189million.

Jekada was, among the six persons accused of committing criminal breach of trust and misappropriation.

Justice Affen granted him bail following the argument made on his behalf by his counsel, Gyang Zi.

The judge ordered that the surety would have to be recommended to the court in writing by Zi.

He further ordered that the surety would swear to affidavit of means and possesses landed property equivalent to the bail sum in Abuja.

Jekada was ordered to drop his international passport with the court, while he was remanded in Kuje prison pending fulfilment of the bail condition.

Affen adjourned until Sept. 16 for commencement of trial.
